フレンチヴィンテージは汲み尽くせることの無い豊かな表情を見せてくれる一方で、同じものが製造できない以上、やがては枯渇してしまう有限の資源である。フレンチヴィンテージの世界観を現代の技術で再現し、より多くの人へ伝えていくために、guépardは誕生した。 French vintage eyewear is outstanding in its uniqueness and is praised as art in its own right. The frame materials, patterns and colors are no longer reproducible using by modern-day technology. So eyewear nowadays has already forgone the artisanal touch to details in exchange for production efficiency. Each and every vintage eyewear frame of its day is so rare that finding a product in the same design is almost impossible.

French vintage eyewear shows its indescribably alluring appearance while facing its inevitable fate stocks eventually being depleted because of its one-of-a-kind design. To reproduce the charm and feel of the French vintage using modern-day technology and share its original spirit with more people, the eyewear brand, guépard, has been launched by two French vintage eyewear experts: Masashi Yamamura and Kazuki Yanagihara.

Yamamura is the owner of eyewear store, SPEAKEASY, in Kobe, Hyogo, while Yanagihara runs his own eyewear store, Fréquence, in Sapporo, Hokkaido. Despite the fact that there are only a handful of stores specializing in vintage eyewear in Japan—let alone those dealing in unused vintage products—both Yamamura and Yanagihara are renowned French vintage eyewear experts. Paving the way for French vintage eyewear while developing guépard, both have long sourced a wide range of French eyewear frames and introduced them into Japan.

Yamamura and Yanagihara also jointly published a French vintage eyewear archive book, entitled “FrameFrance.” It explores the design of a wide array of French vintage eyewear pieces from the 1940s to the 1950s, a period when French eyewear took the world by storm with its excellence and unparalleled quality.

 戦後日本のインダストリアルデザインにおける最大の功労者との呼び声も高い柳宗理が手掛けたサイドチェア。スタッキング可能な本仕様は、日本民藝館の会議室用椅子としてデザインされました。 1969年、FRPのパイオニアとして知られるコトブキより発表された一体成形シェルを持つ本作。
当時、Charles & Ray Eamesのシェルチェアに見られるようなエッジの折り返し構造が主流であった中、本作はその折り返しを排したデザインを採用しています。 背もたれと座面の間を膨らませることで十分な強度を確保しながら、包み込むような座り心地とスッキリとしたシックな造形を両立。
合理性と造形美が静かに共存する、柳宗理らしい設計思想が表れた一脚です。 ベースには左右の連結とスタッキングが可能なスタッキングベースを採用。
日本の住環境に配慮した省スペース設計も魅力のひとつです。 今回入荷した個体は、香川県内の施設で使用されていた当時の別注モデル。

 This stacking side chair was designed by Sori Yanagi, one of the most influential figures in postwar Japanese industrial design. Originally created for the conference room of the Japan Folk Crafts Museum, the chair was introduced in 1969 by Kotobuki, a pioneer in FRP production. While many contemporary fiberglass shell chairs—such as those by Charles & Ray Eames—relied on folded edges for reinforcement, this design eliminated the edge return.
Structural strength is instead achieved through the distinctive curvature between the backrest and seat. The result is a chair that balances structural clarity, ergonomic comfort, and refined minimalism. This particular piece was custom-ordered for a facility in Kagawa Prefecture and features a rare muted red shell.
It is the Low-height specification among the three available seat heights (Low / Mid / High). Please note that multiple pieces are available; the photographs shown are representative samples. Customers purchasing in-store may select their preferred piece from available stock.

Although the designer of this piece remains unknown, the chair embodies the refined metalworking expertise that defined Terada Seisakujo during this era. Only a very limited number were produced, making it an exceptionally scarce piece on the market today. Unlike standard Pastoe specifications, this piece was created with unique dimensions, making it the only example in existence. Shiro Kuramata (1934–1991) is regarded as one of Japan’s most influential interior and furniture designers. With seminal works such as How High the Moon, Miss Blanche, and Sing Sing Sing, Kuramata introduced innovative uses of expanded metal and poetic transparency that reshaped the landscape of contemporary design. Supporting the realization of these works was Terada Iron Works, a workshop known for its exceptional craftsmanship and for faithfully translating designers’ intentions into physical form. Their collaboration with Kuramata produced numerous masterpieces, including the iconic expanded-metal creations that marked his career. It is believed that this is the only existing piece in Japan. A second lounge-type prototype was produced around the same period, and is reportedly kept and used by Bertheau himself in his private residence. Bertheau-Suzuki was born in Paris in 1956. His father, Ren Suzuki, studied under Le Corbusier, and Bertheau himself apprenticed with Jean Prouvé and Charlotte Perriand—later collaborating with Perriand on several works. His background places him within the lineage of modern French architectural design. Terada Seisakujo, the workshop that produced this chair, is widely known for its collaborations with Shiro Kuramata, Marc Newson, and other leading designers. The workshop famously manufactured Kuramata’s How High the Moon, transforming industrial expanded metal—previously used solely for fencing—into an iconic piece of contemporary furniture. Their craftsmen, led by president Tatsuo Terada, are celebrated for executing designers’ visions with absolute precision.
