It is believed that this is the only existing piece in Japan. A second lounge-type prototype was produced around the same period, and is reportedly kept and used by Bertheau himself in his private residence. Bertheau-Suzuki was born in Paris in 1956. His father, Ren Suzuki, studied under Le Corbusier, and Bertheau himself apprenticed with Jean Prouvé and Charlotte Perriand—later collaborating with Perriand on several works. His background places him within the lineage of modern French architectural design. Terada Seisakujo, the workshop that produced this chair, is widely known for its collaborations with Shiro Kuramata, Marc Newson, and other leading designers. The workshop famously manufactured Kuramata’s How High the Moon, transforming industrial expanded metal—previously used solely for fencing—into an iconic piece of contemporary furniture.
