第二次世界大戦中に培われた成形技術を家具へと応用し、複雑な三次元曲面を一体成形した、家具史を代表するプロダクトです。
本個体は、ハーマンミラー社の依頼を受けたZenith Plastics社によって製造された、1950年代初頭の初期ファイバーグラスシェル。
シェルの縁には初期型特有のロープエッジが見られ、裏面にはZenith Plastics期のラベル跡が残されています。
淡いパーチメント系のシェルには、ガラス繊維が密に浮かび上がり、光の当たり方によって繊維の表情や色の濃淡が変化します。後年の製品には見られない、初期ファイバーグラスならではの力強く有機的な質感です。
シェルに取り付けられた繊細なワイヤーベースと、緩やかな曲線を描くウッドランナーによって、身体を預けると心地よく揺れるロッキングチェアとして仕上げられています。
シェル、金属、木という異なる素材がバランスよく組み合わされ、どの角度から見ても彫刻的な美しさを感じられる一脚です。
ニューヨーク近代美術館（MoMA）のパーマネントコレクションにも収蔵される、20世紀を代表するプロダクトデザインです。

An early RAR Rocking Armchair designed by Charles and Ray Eames.
Developed by applying wartime molding technology to furniture production, the one-piece fiberglass shell became one of the defining achievements of 20th-century modern design.
This example features an early fiberglass shell manufactured by Zenith Plastics for Herman Miller in the early 1950s.
The shell retains the distinctive rope edge associated with early production, together with remnants of a Zenith-era label on the underside.
Its pale parchment-colored surface reveals a dense and expressive pattern of glass fibers. The appearance changes subtly with the light, creating the organic depth and texture for which early Eames fiberglass shells are particularly valued.
The sculptural shell is paired with a delicate wire base and curved wooden runners, creating the low, gently rocking form of the RAR.
The combination of fiberglass, metal and wood gives the chair a balanced architectural presence from every angle.
Part of the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), it remains one of the most important examples of 20th-century product design.
Please note that this is a vintage item showing signs of age and use, including scratches, abrasions, discoloration and surface wear.
The wire base shows oxidation and age-related patina, while the wooden runners display scratches and wear from use. Fixings or consumable components may have been replaced or adjusted during the chair’s lifetime.
