第二次世界大戦中に培われた成形合板の技術を家具へと応用し、1940年代に誕生した、イームズ初期を代表するプロダクトです。
背もたれ、座面、脚部をそれぞれ立体的に成形したプライウッドによって構成され、身体に沿う有機的な曲面と、木という素材の特性を活かした軽やかな構造が特徴です。
本個体は、Evans Products CompanyのMolded Plywood Divisionによって製造された1940年代の初期個体。
座面裏には、Evans Products Companyのラベルが残されており、
“Manufactured by EVANS PRODUCTS COMPANY / MOLDED PLYWOOD DIVISION”
“herman miller furniture company / SOLE DISTRIBUTOR”
“Designed by CHARLES EAMES”
の表記を確認できます。
Herman Millerによる本格的な自社生産へ移行する以前の、Evans Products Company製造期にあたる一脚です。
成形されたプライウッドの断面には積層構造が現れ、座面や背もたれの緩やかな曲面、前後へ広がる脚部まで、イームズが追求した成形合板による構造美をあらゆる角度から見ることができます。
長い年月を経た木部には、色味の濃淡や擦れ、傷などが見られ、ヴィンテージならではの柔らかな表情へと変化しています。
後のミッドセンチュリーモダンデザインへ大きな影響を与えた、20世紀を代表するプライウッドチェアのひとつです。

An early DCW (Dining Chair Wood) designed by Charles and Ray Eames.
Developed from experiments in molded plywood technology during the Second World War, the DCW emerged in the 1940s as one of the defining early works of Eames design.
The chair is constructed from separately molded plywood elements forming the backrest, seat and legs. Its gently sculpted surfaces follow the contours of the body while taking full advantage of the structural flexibility and strength of molded plywood.
This example was manufactured in the 1940s by the Molded Plywood Division of Evans Products Company.
The underside retains its original Evans Products Company label, marked:
“Manufactured by EVANS PRODUCTS COMPANY / MOLDED PLYWOOD DIVISION”
“herman miller furniture company / SOLE DISTRIBUTOR”
“Designed by CHARLES EAMES”
This places the chair within the early Evans production period, before manufacturing was later brought under Herman Miller.
The exposed plywood edges reveal the layered construction of the material, while the curved seat, backrest and splayed legs demonstrate the sculptural possibilities of molded plywood from every angle.
Decades of use have given the wood a warm and varied surface, with subtle changes in tone, wear and patina that reflect the chair’s age and history.
An important example of early Eames furniture, the DCW remains one of the defining molded plywood designs of 20th-century modernism.
