第二次世界大戦中に培われた成形技術を家具へと応用し、複雑な三次元曲面を一体成形した、20世紀の家具史を代表するプロダクトです。
本個体は、Herman Millerによって製造されたヴィンテージのファイバーグラスシェル。
最大の特徴は、現在では生産されていない希少色「Terracotta」。
赤、オレンジ、ブラウンが混ざり合うような深みのある色合いで、光の当たり方によって鮮やかなオレンジから落ち着いた赤褐色まで、さまざまな表情を見せます。
シェル全体にはガラス繊維が密に浮かび上がり、現行素材にはない、ヴィンテージファイバーグラスならではの力強く有機的な質感が感じられます。
裏面にはHerman Millerのエンボス刻印が確認できます。
シェルには、繊細なワイヤー構造によるエッフェルベースを組み合わせています。
有機的な曲面を持つシェルと、幾何学的なワイヤーベースとの対比は、イームズのシェルチェアを象徴する組み合わせのひとつです。
単体でも強い存在感を持ちながら、木や金属、アートピースなどさまざまな素材と自然に馴染む一脚です。

A vintage fiberglass Arm Shell Chair designed by Charles and Ray Eames.
Developed through the adaptation of wartime molding technology to furniture production, the one-piece fiberglass shell became one of the defining achievements of 20th-century modern design.
This example features a vintage fiberglass shell manufactured by Herman Miller.
Its most distinctive feature is the rare discontinued Terracotta color.
The rich surface shifts between orange, red and earthy brown depending on the light, giving the chair remarkable depth and character.
Dense glass fibers remain clearly visible throughout the shell, creating the expressive and organic texture associated with vintage Eames fiberglass production.
An embossed Herman Miller marking can be found on the underside of the shell.
The shell is paired with a delicate wire Eiffel base, creating one of the most recognizable configurations of the Eames shell chair.
The contrast between the organic molded shell and the geometric wire structure gives the chair a sculptural presence from every angle.
The depth of color, exposed fiberglass and natural signs of age give this example a character that can only be found in vintage production.
Please note that this is a vintage item showing signs of age and use, including scratches, abrasions, discoloration and surface wear.
Variations in the fiberglass surface and exposed glass fibers are inherent to the material and production process.
The wire base shows scratches, oxidation and areas of surface rust consistent with age.
The production date of the wire base has not been verified.
The shock mounts and fixing components show evidence of later replacement or repair, and some consumable parts such as the glides may also have been replaced during the chair’s lifetime.
