第二次世界大戦中に培われた成形技術を家具へと応用し、複雑な三次元曲面を単一の素材から成形した、20世紀の家具史を代表するプロダクトです。
本個体は、アメリカのHerman Miller Furniture Companyによって製造されたヴィンテージのファイバーグラスシェルです。
裏面には、当時使用されていたHerman Miller Furniture Companyの紙製パテントラベルが残されています。
ラベルに記載された特許番号、円形の工場検査印、小型ショックマウントなどのディテールから、第2世代へ移行した初期、1959年から1960年頃に製造された個体と考えられます。
カラーは、イームズのファイバーグラスシェルにおける最初期のカラーのひとつ「Parchment」。
アイボリーと淡いベージュの中間に位置する柔らかな色調で、光の当たり方によって、ほのかなイエローやグリーンを含んだような表情を見せます。
シェル全体にはガラス繊維が密に浮かび上がり、現行素材にはない、ヴィンテージファイバーグラス特有の力強く有機的な質感が感じられます。
シェルには、ブラック仕上げのスチール製Xベースを組み合わせています。
有機的な曲面を持つシェルと、簡潔なスチールベースとの対比によって、イームズの思想であるシェルとベースの交換可能性がよく表れた構成です。
Parchmentは木や金属、石、アートピースなど、さまざまな素材と自然に馴染む色です。

A vintage fiberglass Side Shell Chair designed by Charles and Ray Eames.
Developed through the adaptation of wartime molding technology to furniture production, the one-piece fiberglass shell became one of the defining achievements of 20th-century modern design.
This example features a vintage fiberglass shell manufactured in the United States by the Herman Miller Furniture Company.
The underside retains its original-style Herman Miller Furniture Company paper patent label.
Based on the patent numbers listed on the label, the circular factory inspection stamp and the small shock mounts, the shell is believed to date from the early period of second-generation production, circa 1959–1960.
The color is Parchment, one of the earliest colors developed for the Eames fiberglass shell collection.
Positioned between ivory and pale beige, the surface can also display subtle yellow or green undertones depending on the surrounding light.
Dense glass fibers remain clearly visible throughout the shell, creating the expressive and organic texture associated with early vintage Eames fiberglass production.
The shell is paired with a black-finished steel X-base.
The contrast between the organically molded shell and the restrained steel structure reflects the Eameses’ concept of combining a universal shell with interchangeable bases.
The quiet Parchment color works naturally alongside wood, metal, stone and artworks, while the distinctive fiberglass surface gives the chair a subtle sculptural presence.
It may be used as a dining or desk chair, or placed independently as an accent piece.
The depth of color, exposed fibers and natural signs of age give this example a character found only in vintage fiberglass production.
Please note that this is a vintage item showing signs of age and use, including scratches, abrasions, discoloration, stains and surface wear.
Variations in the fiberglass surface and exposed glass fibers are inherent to the material and its original production process.
Linear scratches and dark surface marks are visible on the underside of the shell.
The paper patent label shows age-related wear, staining, tears and partial loss.
The steel base shows scratches, paint loss and oxidation consistent with age.
The production date of the base and the date on which it was paired with the shell have not been verified.
The shock mounts and fixing components may have undergone later replacement or repair.
Areas around the shock mounts show adhesive residue and possible evidence of previous repair.
Consumable components such as the floor glides may also have been replaced during the chair’s lifetime.
