第二次世界大戦中に培われた成形技術を家具へと応用し、複雑な三次元曲面を一体成形した、20世紀の家具史を代表するプロダクトです。
本個体は、Herman Millerによって製造されたヴィンテージのファイバーグラスシェル。
裏面にはHerman Millerのエンボスと、製造工場を示す円形の「S」マークが確認できます。
この「S」は、当時Herman Millerのシェル製造を担っていたSummit Plasticsを示すマークです。
Herman Millerのエンボス、小型ショックマウント、Summit Plasticsのマーク、カラー構成などのディテールから、第2世代へ移行した初期、1959年から1960年頃に製造されたシェルと考えられます。
カラーは、イームズ夫妻が選定した初期6色のひとつ「Sea Foam Green」。
淡いグリーンにグレーやブルーを含んだような、静かで奥行きのある色合いです。
光の当たり方によって、明るいミントグリーンから落ち着いたグレイッシュグリーンまで、さまざまな表情を見せます。
シェル全体には白いガラス繊維が非常に密に浮かび上がり、Sea Foam Greenの色面と重なることで、奥行きのあるマーブル状の表情を生み出しています。
現行のプラスチック製シェルとは異なる、ヴィンテージファイバーグラスならではの力強く有機的な質感です。
シェルには、ブラック仕上げのローワイヤーベースを組み合わせています。
座面高約30cmの低いプロポーションで、ラウンジチェアに近いリラックスした姿勢でお使いいただけます。
有機的な曲面を持つシェルと、床面近くまで広がる幾何学的なワイヤーベースとの対比が、椅子全体に彫刻的な存在感を与えています。

A vintage fiberglass Side Shell Chair designed by Charles and Ray Eames.
Developed through the adaptation of wartime molding technology to furniture production, the one-piece fiberglass shell became one of the defining achievements of 20th-century modern design.
This example features a vintage fiberglass shell manufactured for Herman Miller in the United States.
The underside bears an embossed Herman Miller marking together with a circular “S” factory mark.
The “S” identifies Summit Plastics, one of the manufacturers responsible for producing fiberglass shells for Herman Miller.
Based on the embossed Herman Miller marking, the Summit Plastics stamp, the small shock mounts and the original color range, the shell is believed to date from the early period of second-generation production, circa 1959–1960.
The color is Sea Foam Green, one of the original six fiberglass colors selected by Charles and Ray Eames.
Its subtle tone combines pale green with grey and blue undertones, shifting from a fresh mint-like color to a quieter grey-green depending on the surrounding light.
Dense white glass fibers remain clearly visible throughout the shell.
The fibers overlap with the translucent color surface to create a remarkably deep, almost marbled appearance.
This expressive and organic texture is a defining characteristic of early vintage Eames fiberglass production and cannot be reproduced by later molded-plastic versions.
The shell is paired with a black-finished low wire base.
With a seat height of approximately 30 cm, its low-slung proportions provide a relaxed seating position similar to that of a lounge chair.
The contrast between the organically molded shell and the geometric wire structure extending close to the floor gives the chair a distinctive sculptural presence.
Its construction can be appreciated from the front, side and rear, allowing it to function not only as seating but also as a compelling object within an interior.
A circular inventory number marked “99” remains on the upper front of the shell.
It may have been applied for inventory control at a school or public institution, offering a glimpse into the chair’s history of use in an institutional or communal setting.
